How long does SMP last?
Scalp Micropigmentation is semi permanent and does get lighter over time. Pigments will be broken down by your immune system and the sun’s UV rays.
How does SMP work? Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that involves the application of tiny pigment deposits to the scalp’s epidermal layer. These pigments are meticulously placed to replicate the appearance of hair follicles, creating the illusion of a fuller and denser head of hair, effectively concealing baldness or thinning areas.
The ink, machine and micro needles used are specialised for scalp tattooing – We don’t go as deep as a regular tattoo, only into the lower epidermis, as this ensures it stays crisp and replicates your natural hair follicles!
The original treatment can last up to 10 years for some people, however it will require refreshes every few years. On average most people would look at getting a refresh sometime in 2-5 years to freshen up the colour.
Below – 3 year old SMP treatment (not our work). The client has a considerable amount of old sun damage which has caused his SMP to fade quicker & unevenly.
Factors like skin oiliness, sun exposure, burning and peeling etc will determine how quickly it fades. Everyone’s skin and lifestyle is different so times are just a guideline.
Depending on the original tattoo’s appearance, refreshes are generally just one session to go over the original tattoo and any faded areas to make them pop again, however the original tattoo would still be visible.
If clients were to never get a refresh, their SMP would just fade to a very light shadow or eventually fade away completely.
All our SMP hair tattoo Melbourne bookings include one refresh within 12 months to add darkness, density, blend in any additional hair loss, cover premature fading, or make changes to your hairline style as needed.
