What is Female Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation for women is a non-invasive, non-surgical hair loss treatment that involves the use of micro-needles to apply tiny dots with pigment to the scalp. The process is similar to tattooing, but the goal is to create the appearance of hair follicles rather than a design or image.

Scalp micropigmentation can be used to create the look of a fuller head of hair, camouflage scars on your scalp or bald patches, or even create the appearance of a full hairline. The process of injecting pigment into your scalp is usually across a handful of sessions.

Customisation of Scalp Micropigmentation

The customisation available of scalp micropigmentation means that all clients can have the perfect solution that matches their natural hair colour. Clients don’t need to go to the extreme of a hair transplant, which includes more down time and the final results may not be what you were looking for.

The initial consultation is important for most clients to discuss their personal situation and for the technician to get the right pigment to match your existing hair follicles. After the treatment, thanks to all the tiny dots, no one will know the difference because the scalp micropigmentation will look so natural.

How does women's SMP work?

Book Consultation

The first step is to schedule a consultation with a scalp micropigmentation specialist. During this appointment, the specialist will assess your situation and discuss your goals, desired results and expectations. The scalp micropigmentation treatment typically involves several sessions over a few weeks or months.

Personalised Treatment

During each session, the specialist will use micro-needles to apply pigment to the scalp, gradually building up the appearance of hair follicles. The treatment is typically painless and the recovery time is minimal, allowing you to resume your daily activities immediately after each session.

Aftercare

After each session, you'll need to follow specific aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and optimal results. For the first 3 days this includes avoiding water on the scalp and excessive sweating, sun exposure, and hair products. For detailed aftercare information read our guide on SMP Aftercare.

Maintenance

SMP is a long-lasting solution to hair loss, but it may require occasional touch-up sessions to maintain its appearance over time. The frequency of touch-up sessions will vary depending on factors such as skin type, lifestyle, and desired hair density.

Overall, SMP for women is a safe and effective solution to hair loss that provides natural-looking results and requires minimal maintenance. If you’re experiencing hair loss problems, scalp micropigmentation may be a great solution to help you regain your confidence and feel great about your hair.

Hair Loss Causes

If you are experiencing thinning areas on your scalp, there are a few reasons why this may be happening. You are not alone as female pattern baldness affects one in three women and hair loss can be permanent.

Some of the main causes that can impact your natural hair include:

  • Short-term shedding of hair, which can occur after pregnancy, surgery or a major illness.
  • Breaking of existing hair from things like styling treatment and general pulling or twisting of hair.
  • Patchy areas that include bald spots, which can be due to alopecia, for example.
  • Hormone imbalances.
  • Vitamin or iron deficiency.
  • Some skin conditions.
  • After chemotherapy or from some medications.
  • Diseases including diabetes or Lupus.

Before you go down the path of a shaved head, due to any one of these causes impacting your existing hair, consider how scalp micropigmentation can help you. It can diffuse thinning hair and even improve your receding hairline. Many women can benefit from this treatment, no matter what is causing it

Emotional Benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation

No, you do not have to give yourself a buzz cut, scalp micropigmentation is a great solution and treatment option for many women. The effects can be almost life-changing as you get your confidence back. Scalp micropigmentation gives the desired result of the appearance of thicker hair with minimal scarring or redness.

Some of the key emotional and mental benefits that each woman may see include:

  • Reduced Anxiety – Constantly worrying about your hair can cause body issues and anxiety. The scalp micropigmentation process provides an effective and semi-permanent solution, so you can focus on other areas of your life.
  • Increased Confidence – Like it or not, hair plays a significant role in a person’s self-image, especially for women. When the hair on your scalp or crown starts to recede, it can lead to self-consciousness. When getting a scalp tattoo, it gives the illusion of normal hair, which can provide a complete contrast of emotions compared to before the process started.
  • Improved Control – Sometimes, it can feel like you are losing control when your normal hair starts falling out. A scalp micropigmentation procedure can make you feel like you are taking back control of your life and making a proactive choice.
  • Better Social Interaction – When you are feeling self-conscious it is difficult to feel comfortable in social situations. If you think everyone is staring at your head, you might withdraw from any outings. With a scalp micropigmentation procedure, you get your confidence back, which makes you feel better in social situations.

SMP FOR WOMEN FAQ'S

Long hair or short hair, it doesn’t really matter and treatment may be required if you are losing too much hair. It can have a fairly major impact on your life, so it is important to address it as soon as possible.

There are many treatment options available, however, scalp micropigmentation for women is quite popular because it doesn’t require surgery. Just like male pattern baldness, women can suffer from this as well and there are many other factors to consider as well.

We explain more about different patterns and types of thinning hair here, there are three categories that thinning hair usually falls into:

  1. Androgenetic Alopecia – This is also known as female pattern baldness and is the most common type where hair thins on the side and top of your scalp.
  2. Telogen Effluvium – This is usually caused by stress. Stress pushes a significant amount of hair follicles into a resting phase and then within a couple of months, those follicles can fall out.
  3. Anagen Effluvium – The main cause of this is usually medication if it compromises a growing hair follicle, for example, if you are going through chemotherapy.

The scalp micropigmentation process for women is a non-invasive and non-surgical option that involves the use of micro-needles to apply pigment to the scalp. The process is similar to a tattoo and acts sort of like permanent makeup, but the goal is to create the appearance of hair follicles rather than a design or image. Scalp micropigmentation can be used to create the look of thicker hair, camouflage scars or bald patches, or even create the appearance of full hairlines.

Several factors can contribute to hair loss in women. Some of the most common causes of low hair density include:

  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormones, such as those that occur during pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid disorders, can lead to hair loss.
  • Genetics: Hair loss can be hereditary and may be passed down from either side of the family.
  • Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions such as alopecia areata, autoimmune diseases, and scalp infections can cause hair loss.
  • Medications: Certain medications, such as those used to treat cancer, depression and high blood pressure, can cause hair loss as a side effect.
  • Nutritional deficiencies: A lack of nutrients such as iron, zinc, and biotin can contribute to hair loss.
  • Stress: High levels of stress can disrupt the hair growth cycle and lead to hair loss.
  • Hairstyles and hair treatments: Certain hairstyles that pull on the hair, such as tight braids or ponytails, as well as chemical treatments like bleaching or colouring, can cause hair loss over time.

Scalp micropigmentation is an excellent option for those seeking a simple camouflage solution to female hair loss, as it can effectively create the appearance of thick and healthy hair. It is a semi-permanent option that can almost instantly make you start feeling better about your body.

The duration of the women’s scalp micropigmentation procedure depends on various factors such as the size of the treated area and the desired density. Typically, each session takes a few hours and requires 2 to 3 sessions to achieve the desired results.

Women’s SMP treatment provides long-lasting results. However, longevity can vary depending on individual factors, such as skin type, sun exposure and lifestyle. With proper care and maintenance, results last for several years before requiring touch-up sessions.

Usually, the needs of female clients are different, i.e. they are not completely bald, instead they are losing their hair and are looking for a solution that provides the appearance of more hair. Thinning hair can be a problem for both men and women and the scalp micropigmentation procedure can assist both by using the correct pigment colour on your scalp.

A scalp micropigmentation treatment provides a semi-permanent solution and as tiny dots are injected into your scalp, there are some key things you should know to improve the longevity. Even though surgery isn’t required, there is some housekeeping to take care of, both before and after the treatment.

Remember, multiple sessions are likely required, however, it will depend on your personal situation. Even though scalp micropigmentation sort of acts like permanent makeup, touch-ups are required over the long term to ensure your scalp or crown looks as natural as possible.

For the scalp micropigmentation procedure, here are some key things to be aware of beforehand:

  • Moisturise your scalp multiple times a day, if possible, in the lead-up to your appointment.
  • One week beforehand, wash your hair with a non-abrasive shampoo.
  • Don’t use a razor on your scalp in the 24 hours leading up to your appointment.
  • Don’t use tanning beds or try and get a tan.
  • Don’t take aspirin or fish oil tablets one week before your appointment.
  • Refrain from drinking alcohol in the 24 hours before your appointment.

After the client’s scalp micropigmentation procedure, maintenance is required, which includes:

  • Despite not requiring surgery, redness and general irritation are normal, so it is important to try and let your scalp be.
  • Try not to peel, scratch, pick or rub the area. Similar to a normal tattoo, your skin will start to scab and it will fall off over time.
  • Avoid sweating or using styling products on your scalp.
  • In the first four days, do not wash your hair or apply too much water pressure to your scalp.

If clients follow all these steps, we usually see a head tattoo last for four years. Touch-ups are required after this period to ensure clients can keep a similar look. We always make sure our clients know that the scalp micropigmentation procedure doesn’t help grow back your hair, instead, it gives the illusion of healthy hair.
